All systems in one environment
EK Netherlands (formerly Euretco) is the largest retail service organization in the Netherlands. They support 1,500 entrepreneurs in sectors such as living, fashion, sports, DIY and books, both in physical stores and online. EK uses different systems, such as inventory management, cash registers, purchasing, support and internal communication. EK aims to bring these systems together in a personalized “My Environment,” both per organization and per branch. With the web and mobile application EK SPA (Single Point of Access), users can easily find all information from these systems in one central place.

Whether it’s new listings, store inventory or support, users only need one login to find all information in one system. This saves time and effort, allowing them to focus on what really matters: serving customers and generating sales. In addition, working with one system reduces errors by not storing information in multiple places. Keeping data consistent and editable significantly improves data quality and reliability.
Efficient internal communications for retail organizations
A retail organization may have dozens of branches with hundreds of employees. Smooth internal communication is crucial to working efficiently. Employees can send each other notifications with tasks or share information through a knowledge base. Lessons from one branch can be useful to another. In addition, headquarters can easily send information to all branches, such as internal changes, discount promotions and general announcements.
Personalized environments for any organization
It is important that users feel at home in their own organization’s environment. Therefore, a white-label environment is designed for each organization in its own corporate identity. An organization with multiple branches can also add its own clusters. For example, each branch of Intersport has its own environment with customized functionalities. This provides the user with a fully personalized environment, with only the information that is truly relevant.
Mobile -and web application
Users on the store floor do not always have access to a computer or laptop. Therefore, a mobile-friendly app was also developed for EK, allowing them to access the “My environment anywhere, anytime.” This app was built with Mendix Native Mobile for iOS and Android, so it fits both operating systems perfectly technically and in terms of user experience. The mobile app is linked to the web application, keeping them always in sync.
The steps to successful app launch
The initial phase established a set of requirements for the MVP, the first live run of the application:
- Start merging intranet, help desk (support) and knowledge base.
- Connect the POS and inventory management system.
- Retail chain HUBO with 190 branches will be the first organization in the application.
- After that, the application will be rolled out at Intersport and other companies.
- A properly functioning native mobile app for iOS and Android is required for going live.
Mendix implementation
The low-code platform Mendix was used to link the systems and build the web and mobile application. This enabled rapid technical development of the application, which is fully scalable. Without developer intervention, EK can add new companies to the service platform.
Result
In four months, a web application and a native Android and iOS app were developed in collaboration with EK. The app was rolled out at the largest retailer HUBO, linking the systems intranet, help desk (support) and knowledge base. Other systems and retail organizations will follow in further development.
