Earlier, we launched the free Ciphix Mendix Dev Tool (formerly known as Bizzomate Mendix Dev Tool), an application that quickly detects vulnerabilities in Mendix applications. Developers can use this tool to enhance the resilience of their Mendix applications against cyberattacks. It also provides detailed insights into the status of applications.

Recent Mendix Meetup and an Exciting Announcement

At a recent Meetup attended by more than 60 participants, Coen Spinhoven, Mendix MVP and developer of the Ciphix Mendix Dev Tool, presented exciting updates to the tool. He introduced the Performance Monitor Module and explained:

“We plan to revamp the performance monitor and introduce functionality to gather even deeper statistics about your application. By connecting your Mendix app to this module, every activity is logged with a detailed view of what is happening within your application. This helps developers make informed decisions and quickly identify potential bottlenecks.”

Performance Monitoring

The Performance section of the Ciphix Mendix Dev Tool analyses key performance metrics for Mendix applications. It enables developers to quickly identify and resolve issues by visualising metrics through:

• Waterfall charts detailing each recorded activity, allowing seamless navigation.
• Aggregated performance statistics, providing a clear overview of potential bottlenecks.
• Detailed microflow diagrams, showing sub-microflows, actions, and queries, including XPATH, OQL, and SQL.
• Heatmaps, visually highlighting slow page components with a single click.

Basic profiling is available without additional modules; however, for detailed statistics, the Ciphix Performance Monitor Module must be added to your project.

Security Insights with Data Reading

A common vulnerability in Mendix applications is the improper configuration of user permissions, which can lead to unintended data exposure. The Ciphix Mendix Dev Tool helps developers identify such vulnerabilities during and after application development. It generates comprehensive tables illustrating what data users can access based on their permissions.

The tool relies solely on functionalities available within the Mendix client (with the exception of the optional performance module). This approach, similar to a penetration test, allows developers to validate and refine security configurations before their applications go live.

Application Insights

In addition to security checks, the tool provides in-depth insights into the status of Mendix applications, including:

• An overview of all pages within the application.
• A list of all microflows and nanoflows used.
• Information about entities and attributes in use.
• Details of widgets used and their configurations.

These insights help developers better understand the structure and functionality of their applications, simplifying maintenance and further development.

The Ciphix Mendix Dev Tool is available for free and can be installed as a Chrome browser extension. It provides Mendix developers with enhanced insights into the status, security, and performance of their applications, enabling them to build more robust and secure solutions.
